Cognitive Benefits
Ginkgo biloba enhances cerebral microcirculation in the brain, keeping needed energy and oxygen flowing to the brain. Many controlled trials have demonstrated the ability of Ginkgo to support cognitive function.
• A recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that 4 weeks of treatment with gingko biloba extract in younger patients led to significantly superior measures of anxiety disorder or adjustment disorder with anxious mood compared to the placebo group.
• A meta-analysis of nine studies concluded that gingko biloba extracts are beneficial in dementia.
• A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multicenter study tested the effects of gingko biloba extracts for 52 weeks in Alzheimer patients with mild to severe dementia. In 202 patients, the extract appeared to be capable of stabilizing and improving the cognitive performance and the social functioning of demented patients. It has also been shown to delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
• A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of 60 Alzheimer's patients compared Gingko biloba extract to the drug donepezil. After a 24 week supplementation period, Gingko biloba was found to be comparable to donepezil in its improvements compared to the placebo group, as assessed by the Clinical Global Impression score.
Ginkgo biloba is also useful for those whose mental faculties have not yet begun to decline:
• A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study gave Gingko biloba extracts to 60 healthy volunteers between 50 and 65 years of age. After 4 weeks, self-estimated mental health and quality of life were significantly better in the gingko group compared to placebo.
• A placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study found that acute administration of gingko biloba (120-360 mg) produced a sustained improvement in attention in healthy young adults compared to placebo.ADD, ADHD, de
